Three Danville organizations will join forces to provide an opportunity to lean more about the Dan River’s current health and long-term regional water quality issues.
An informative panel discussion scheduled for 10:30 a.m., Friday, November 14 to explore the topic ”After the Spill: Our Future.” The program, presented by The Garden Club of Danville, Gabriella Garden Club and The Wednesday Club of Danville, will be held at The Wednesday Club, 1002 Main St., Danville.
Since February 2014 when coal ash spilled into the Dan River from nearby Duke Power Plant, southern Virginians have monitored North Carolina’s state politics and their power source, Duke Energy.
“ Virginians have depended on federal, Virginia and North Carolina’s states’ agencies to collaborate with Duke Energy for the aquatic health of our river, our drinking water, and our reputation in Danville as a good place for business and recreation, ” said Hollis Stauber, chair of the Conservation Committee of The Garden Club of Danville . “ The clean up has ceased but what will be the long-term health of the Dan River and this regional resource going forward?”
Panel members are regional environmental, legal, legislative and city water experts who have been asked to discuss Dan River status, future possibilities and take questions from the public.
Each panelist will present a short talk followed by questions. Panelists are Barry Dunkley, Danville city water and waste water manager, Frank Holleman, senior attorney, Southern Environmental Law Center, Lucy Laffitte, science and environmental educator and Brian Williams, program manager, Dan River Basin Association.
The presentation moderator is Laurie Moran, president of the Danville Pittsylvania County Chamber of Commerce.
