Bald Head Island Project OK’d

Business & Finance

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Wilmington District, has issued an initial proffered permit to the Village of Bald Head Island for the construction of a 1900 foot terminal groin at the western end of South Beach.

This project is the first of four proposed terminal groins to be permitted in North Carolina following the passage of Senate Bill 110 in 2011. This project was coordinated with the general public, and representatives from local, state and federal agencies in the development of a final environmental impact statement (EIS).

The terminal groin is designed to protect property and prevent further erosion along south beach. As a component of the terminal groin project, the permit authorizes the construction of a fillet with periodic beach nourishment to be completed in tandem with the Corps sand management plan.

Construction on the terminal groin is expected to begin in spring 2015.
