Gulfport Channel Dredging on Track

The Port of Gulfport dredging works that will bring the port’s shipping channel to its federally authorized depth of 36 feet are progressing as planned.

The channel leading to and from the port was 33 feet deep, 3 feet less than its authorized depth.

Dredging of the channel began on September 7th and so far approximately 16,000 feet or 3 miles of channel has been dredged.

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and their contractor have removed more than 800,000 cubic yards or approximately 500,000 tons of spoils.

Completion of the project is scheduled for January 2015. The federal government is providing $4 million for the dredging, and the port will pay $8 million.

This will be the first time since 2009 that the channel will be fully and properly dredged.
