Ohio EPA to Hold Public Hearing on Logan Cleanup Plan

An amended cleanup plan for the 10.6-acre Green I Landfill site near Logan on Hunters Woods Rd. in Green Township (Hocking County) will be the focus of a Feb. 12, 2014, Ohio EPA information session and public hearing. The meeting will begin at 6 p.m. at Ohio EPA’s Southeast District Office, Room 100, 2195 E. Front St. in Logan.

Ohio EPA issued a final site cleanup plan (decision document) in November 2010. In July 2012, Ohio EPA approved the alternate cap which included a clay layer of tested soils from the site. In addition, data was reexamined that showed concentrations in off-site pond sediments were below U.S. EPA’s screening concentration. Therefore, no action was required for the pond. This amended preferred plan reflects this new information.

The proposed cleanup activities include construction of the multi-layer landfill cap; collection and storage or treatment of leachate; development of a long-term operation and maintenance plan that includes periodic sampling of ground water and inspection of the cap; and recording an environmental covenant to prohibit use of ground water for potable or agricultural purposes and to prohibit building or placement of any permanent, occupied structure on the property.

Ohio EPA will consider public comments before finalizing a document that identifies the Agency’s selected cleanup plan.
