DSC Dredge Delivers Marlin Class Dredge to Nigerian Contractor

DSC Dredge LLC, a world leader in dredge technology, has delivered its second new 18-inch x 18-inch Marlin Class dredge along with a DSC multipurpose workboat to a contractor in Nigeria.

These Marlin Class dredges are being used primarily on channel dredging, land development and reclamation as well as mining sharp sand out of the Nigerian rivers. With a digging depth capability of 23 meters, the DSC Marlin Class dredge can operate year round, including during the wet season when the rivers rise and most other dredges must stop operations.

Dredging is beneficial to Nigerian communities by removing silt from the river channels for vessel traffic and then using those dredged materials to build up the low river banks and reclaim usable land. The mining of sharp sand provides valuable construction materials for Nigeria’s booming infrastructure projects.

The DSC Marlin Class dredge is designed to meet the needs of deep mining and aggregate deposits by providing a more efficient tool for material excavation. Every Marlin Class dredge is specifically designed to handle a particular deposit—from sand and gravel to industrial minerals—to ensure maximum efficiency. Deep digging capabilities are made possible by the use of an underwater pump system with a high torque cutter drive assembly to complement the rigorous demands of the deep mining industry.

This DSC Marlin Class dredge features a Metso submersible dredge pump and is reported to be the most advanced and deepest digging dredge in the country. The dredge is powered by Caterpillar diesel engines which together provide over 1500 hp to the dredge.

The DSC multipurpose workboat is one of the most versatile vessels in Nigerian waters. It has the ability to store and transfer 8,000 liters of fuel, has an A-frame and winch for raising and moving anchors, crews quarters with bunks for four men, air conditioning, shower and toilet. There is also a telescoping hydraulic crane for handling spares and pipeline, as well as pusher knees on the bow and tow-bits on the stern.

The workboat is powered by two Caterpillar engines and features a harbor generator for crew comfort when on standby. The twin screw and shallow-draft design is ideal for operations in creeks and rivers where both power and maneuverability are needed.

With the original DSC equipment providing excellent service and lowest overall cost of operations, the first projects were very successful. It was a very easy decision for the contractor to make a repeat order.

DSC has three manufacturing facilities, all proudly in the USA, and offers many types of financing for qualified buyers.

DSC Dredge, LLC advances the engineering, automation, manufacturing and quality of cutter suction and underwater pump mining dredges. The company operates from three major manufacturing facilities located in Reserve, LA, Poplarville, MS and Greenbush, MI.
