The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Galveston District, awarded a contract to Kimrick Performance Group LLC, a small business, in the amount of $1,877,831 for construction of a wider channel bottom that will enable larger storm water conveyance at Sims Bayou, in the vicinity of Hiram Clarke and Buxley bridges.
The contractor is required to perform excavation, sediment removal, build foundation pads and structural concrete under bridges as well as construct cellular concrete mattresses and fabric in the channel’s bed.
“ The entire 19.3 miles of the Sims Bayou’s project will be 99 percent completed once we finalize this portion ,” said Civil Engineer Shakhar Misir, USACE Galveston District . “ Finishing this contract will mark the culmination of 20 years of joint efforts between the district and our project partner, the Harris County Flood Control District.”
According to Misir, work is expected to begin Nov. 1.
Located in south central Houston within Harris County, Sims Bayou is designed to reduce stream flooding from 14,800 acres of urban lands and beneficially affect nearly 94,000 persons living in 35,000 homes, and 2,000 commercial structures. The project consists of 19.3 miles of channel improvements that provide flood damage reduction and erosion control.
The project also includes environmental quality measures and recreational features. The recreation plan includes 13.9 miles of trail system along the banks of the improved channel with the trails connecting to seven city parks that currently exist along the bayou.
