The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, New Orleans District and the City of Carencro, La. have signed a Project Partnership Agreement for the design and construction of flood risk management features within and near the Lafayette Parish city.
“The City of Carencro and the surrounding area has experienced several flooding events, most recently in March of this year, ” stated Durund Elzey, Corps Senior Project Manager . “ The Project Partnership Agreement is a major step forward in reducing the flooding risks to this community.”
A total of 11 structural measures and six nonstructural measures were developed and evaluated as part of the feasibility study final ized in August 2012. Alternative seven was selected as the recommended plan and consists of clearing, grubbing and dressing approximately 12,000 feet of Beau Basin Coulee, as well as constructing a 6.9 acre retention pond. This project, under the Section 205 of the Continuing Authorities Program, is anticipated to reduce damages from a 25-year rainfall event by nearly 90 percent.
Total design and construction costs of the project are estimated at $5.45 million.
