The Port of San Diego has completed its final report on the environmental impacts of a proposed pier replacement project at BAE Systems San Diego Ship repair facility, located at 2205 E. Belt Street, San Diego.
The project will replace and modernize deteriorated facilities and help to service commercial and Navy vessels. The final environmental impact report (EIR) summarizes the possible environmental impacts of constructing the project, including how it might affect water quality, biological resources, and other areas.
A public hearing on the final EIR will be held at 1 p.m. on August 14, 2012, at the regular Board of Port Commissioners monthly meeting. The meeting will take place in the Board Room of the Port Administration Building, 3165 Pacific Highway, in San Diego.
Members of the public, organizations, and governmental agencies are encouraged to attend the hearing.
The proposed project includes the following activities at the BAE Systems San Diego facility:
– Demolition of Piers 4 and 5,
– Removal of five mooring dolphins (structures built in the water for vessels to tie to for stability at berth),
– Construction of new bulkhead sections (a shoreline wall dividing the land and the water),
– Relocation of shoreline infrastructure,
– Dredging,
– Construction of a new Pier 4,
– Construction of a new mooring dolphin.
At the August 14 public hearing, the Board of Port Commissioners will asked to approve issuance of a non-appealable Coastal Development Permit. The project does not fall into a category considered to be appealable to the Coastal Commission.
