Army Base development project gets OK from city council, reports sfgate.com.
The massive project, which includes port dredging to accommodate larger ships, is being developed by California Capital and Investment Group and Prologis and is expected to begin in 2013.
The Oakland Army Base is poised to become the gateway to Oakland and the East Bay when the new eastern span of the Bay Bridge is completed.
Located in West Oakland, the Army Base served as a U.S. Army facility until it closed in 1999. In 2000, the Oakland City Council designated the base and surrounding properties as a Redevelopment Area.
The 1,800-acre Army Base Project Area is divided into three major sub-districts: 16th and Wood Sub-district, the Maritime Sub-district and the Oakland Army Base (OARB) Sub-district. The Project Area is generally bounded by Wood Street, and the Oakland Inner, Middle and Outer Harbors of the Port of Oakland.
The Office of Neighborhood Investment, with the Port and ABM/CCG, is supporting development of the former Army Base by improving infrastructure, remediating hazardous substances in soils and groundwater, and improving housing in the Wood Street area. The Office of Neighborhood Investment is forming a public-private partnership to facilitate the best and highest use of the Army Base.
