“ The dredging will be needed as part of the plans for Port Alma in central Queensland,” the Gladstone Ports Corporation (GPC) said.
The GPC is yet to release its 50-year master plan for the site where other coal terminals are set to be built, according to the ABC News.
It is undertaking a large dredging program in the western basin of Gladstone Harbour and conservationists are concerned about its effect on marine life.
Leo Zussino, the GPC chief executive , says the port is planning to do some dredging in the deep-water channel near the Port Alma site.
“From our estimations and our studies, there’s probably about eight to 12 million cubic metres of dredging required to achieve that outcome, ” he said.
“Compare that to the western basin of Gladstone, where we have an approval for 46 million cubic metres.”
