Lithuania: Van Oord Wins Klaipeda Dredging Deal

Van Oord Wins Klaipeda Dredging Deal

On the 12th of October, 2011 the Port Authority signed the contract agreement with the Dutch company Van Oord Dredging and Marine Contractors BV. The object of this contract is „ The Capital Dredging and Widening of Klaipėda State Seaport Navigation Channel“. The tender of the aforementioned company was selected out of 6 tenders submitted by foreign companies.

The contract price is 129 507 884,00 Lt including VAT.

The contract agreement shall be valid for 12 months from the day it has been signed.

The capital dredging and widening of the Port navigation channel project isvitally important to Klaipėda Port. Having implemented this project the width of the Port navigation channel will increase up to 150 metres ( the present width is 120 metres) and the depth respectively up to 14,5 metres (the present depth is 13-13,5 metres). Hence the safety of gross tonnage vessels entering and leaving the Port and manoeuvring will enhance in line with competitiveness and cargo handling capacity of the Port itself comparing to the neighbouring ports.

Such Port Navigation Channel parameters will create favourable conditions to receive longer and wider postpanamax type vessels 300-310 metres in length and 40 metres in beam. The project should be implemented in 2011-2012 using EU assistance funds under the instrument No. VP2-5.2-SM-01 V of EU structural assistance priority 5 „Development of Trans – European Transport Network“.

It is worth while mentioning that this contract is a record -breaking contract even in several aspects: firstly – it is the largest by its scope and its price contract agreement signed by Port Authority and currently in effect, secondly – it is the largest by its scope and its price capital dredging contract throughout the whole history of the Port, thirdly – it is the largest contract agreement throughout the whole history of the Port in terms of financial scope and fourthly – this contract will be the highest price contract implemented using European Union funds. One more reason for content is the fact that we have successfully signed the contract and already have the Contractor 16 days prior to submission of EU funding application. As it is known October 28, 2011 is the deadline for submission of application and one of mandatory components of this application is the signed contract agreement that is in force“,- said director general Eugenijus Gentvilas.

Pursuant to the concluded contract the intended volume of dredged soil throughout the I stage of works is 3 859 800 m3. The anticipated amount of excavated boulders in diameter from 0,8 to 1,5 metres is 440 units, the amount of boulders larger than 1,5 metres in diameter is 57 units.

The intended volume of dredged soil throughout the II stage is655 200 m3 and the anticipated amount of excavated boulders in diameter from 0,8 to 1,5 metres is 50 units, the amount of boulders larger than 1,5 metres in diameter.

Pursuant to this contract the price of dredged soil is 28,68 Lt per 1 cubic metre.
