Abigroup Completes Port of Gladstone Western Basin Expansion Project

Abigroup has finished a $116 million contract to design and construct the seawall bund and haul road for the Port of Gladstone Western Basin expansion in Queensland.

The project, which was completed ahead of schedule, is part of Gladstone Ports Corporation’s (GPC) infrastructure expansion to cater for the increased shipping requirements.

Abigroup’s Queensland General Manager Steve Abson said, “We’re delighted to have completed this first class project ahead of time for the Gladstone Ports Corporation.

“This project utilised Abigroup’s marine, civil and materials handling expertise to deliver what is an important piece of infrastructure for Australia’s industry.

The project started in October 2010 and before work began Abigroup, together with the design consultant SMEC, came up with a number of improved construction methodologies and design innovations which delivered overall savings for GPC while still meeting the client’s original design intent and functionality.

Abigroup operated GPC’s existing borrow pit during the project which, when at full capacity, was one of the largest rock processing operations in Australia supplying some 4 million tonnes of rock.

The rock was transported 6km from the borrow pit along a new haul road before being placed into the seawall bund.
